From an interview of Miss Canadian Horror 2004:
Horror is a tough genre because many people feel that everything has been done already and they don't want to beat a dead horse.

Wouldn't people who wanted to beat dead horses be the ones writing horror in the first place? The sci-fi writers would want to make it into a cyborg horse. The fantasy writers would pretend it had wings. The mystery writers would try to find out who killed the horse. The true crime writers would find out whose bed the horse's head ended up in. The romance writers would pose a dead Fabio next to the dead horse.
